History of Online and Land Based Casinos
While there are all sorts of theories as to when, where and why it started, we may never know exactly when the first gamblers arose or who they were. Scientists and historical scholars are still not sure where it all got started, but there is strong evidence that games of chance stem from our need to face controlled risks that are not a serious threat to our own health, but still provide us with a level of thrill that we do not get if nothing is at stake,. Ancient China records the first documented evidence of socially instituted gambling with a lottery several thousand years ago, but it would not be until the middle of the 1600’s that the concept of casinos would arise. The word itself is Italian and it means “small house” which referred to a little building in the villas of rich Italians where they would gather with their friends to hear music, dance and wager a bit at a mixture of different games from Italy and also that the Romans had bvrougbht back while conquering the world. These are the very first instances of casinos, but not in the proper form we know today.
For that form, we would have to wait a little bit later towards the end of the 17th Century when the city of Venice would build the Casino di Venezia, a landmark structure that was indeed the very first casino ever built. What is fascinating is that people still travel there to gamble because it is still open for business today. This first wagering house was a lot different than what we know today, but the concept was certainly familiar to modern gamers. Then came Monaco in the late 1800’s, a place where gamblers from around the world would come, especially those who lived in Europe at the time. This was one of the first more world famous casinos and it was known around the planet in a very short amount of time as a haven for those who wanted to place their bets in a place that was legal to do so. Even today, Monaco is a major gambling destination that people from all over the planet come to enjoy.
After this came the United States as it formed and this is where one of the biggest gambling destinations would rise up less than a century later: Las Vegas. Paired with Macau and Monaco, these are some of the largest wagering cities in the world and every year millions upon millions of people visit these places to take part in the casinos there which offer not only wagering games but huge entertainment, royal quality dining and hotels that amaze architects the world over. There is something special about these places, but they did start to change with the invention of the slot machines in the early 1900’s. Soon, there would be all sorts of mechanical and then digital ways to wager. After this it was only a matter of time before the casinos came online which is one of the most popular ways to play these days. While no one can know the future, judging by the past, casinos certainly aren’t going away and they are bound to get even better.
